Sewage Management

On-site sewage management systems

All systems must be registered with Council and an approval to operate is required. Council approval is also required for an installation or alteration of a system.

Sewage Treatment

Council’s Dubbo Sewage Treatment Plant is licensed by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA). The licence number is 3850. For more information about licences click here: http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/epa/

The following table indicates some parameters of sewage as received at the Dubbo Sewage Treatment Plant, called influent, and the quality of the water after treatment, when it leaves the plant. This is called “effluent”.

The unit “cfu/100 mL” refers to the number of colony forming units in a 100 millilitre sample. It is a biological measure of viable bacterial cells in the water.

Electrical conductivity is measured in units of micro Siemens per centimetre (µS/cm). It is an indication of the amount of nutrient, impurities or salts in solution.

Pressure Sewerage

In outlying areas Council has adopted pressure sewerage as a means of providing sewerage. In such cases the pressure sewerage system replaces the gravity sewerage network Council would have constructed in the past.

Pressure sewerage units can be supplied by Council to property owners currently serviced by their own septic tank and effluent pump.

For a copy of Council's Pressure Sewerage Policy click here.

If you are the property owner serviced by a pressure sewerage system you should have a Home Owners Manual.

Terminology

The word “Sewage” is used to describe liquid waste discharged from a residential property which includes human waste.
"Sewerage" is the word used to describe the system of pipes or channels and pump stations used to convey sewage to the sewage treatment plant . Pipes that convey sewage are also known as “Sewers.”
