Pet owners can save up to 70 per cent on the costs of surgical desexing, microchipping and vaccination under Dubbo City Council’s Companion Animal Welfare Scheme (CAWS).
In partnership with veterinary practices and the local branch of the RSPCA, Council’s annual pet subsidy scheme kicks off this week for cats and dogs whose owners are on a low income.
In 2010, 67 subsidies were granted for owners of local cats and dogs.
Council’s Manager Environmental Control Amy Nalder said CAWS would be conducted over the next few months, until the $10,000 funding has been expended.
“The subsidies will be offered to eligible applicants on a first-in first-served basis,’’ she said. “If your circumstances are such that you would like to have your dog or cat desexed, but the financial cost is too great, Council may be able to assist through a reduced fee for the veterinary service.
“This scheme subsidises the procedure by up to 70 per cent so it’s an excellent opportunity.’’
Under the CAWS, the following subsidies will apply to successful applicants:

Female cats - $115 Dubbo city Council contrinution, $65 owner contribution, this subsidy applies to desexing and microchipping.
Dogs- $185 Dubbo city Council contrinution, $80 owner contribution, this subsidy applies to desexing, microchipping and vaccination.
“An added bonus of the scheme is that thousands of unwanted puppies and kittens will be prevented,’’ Mrs Nalder said.
Applications are now available at Dubbo City Council, the Dubbo City Animal Shelter or local veterinary practices. Completed forms can be returned to Council’s Civic Administration Building or PO Box 81 Dubbo. The Scheme will continue until all funds have been utilised. All applications will be assessed for eligibility.
“Eligible residents will be given a voucher which can be redeemed at a nominated
Dubbo veterinary practice. You should then call the practice to make an appointment,” Mrs Nalder said.
