Street redevelopment to beautify CBD

Tuesday, July 17, 2012

WORKS AND SERVICES COMMITTEE – JULY 2012
Dubbo City Council's Works and Services Committee last night considered a report regarding two construction projects that will further improve and beautify the streetscape as part of an expansive revitalisation of the central business district (CBD).

Committee Chair Lyn Griffiths said the first stages of the projects were scheduled for 2012/2013 under the Dubbo 2036 Four-Year Delivery Program.

The proposed works relate to the sections of Darling and Brisbane streets between Talbragar and Wingewarra streets.

"Darling Street once carried significant traffic when it was the route of the Newell Highway, and the now local road is showing signs of ageing," Cr Griffiths said.

"Stage 1 of the Darling Street Redevelopment Project will involve a $1.63 million upgrade of the eastern side of the street by renewing the tree planting, installing a piped stormwater drainage system and renewing the kerb and gutter and footpath."

It was noted in the report that appropriate consultation was necessary in respect of the historical significance of the existing memorial avenue of London Plane trees.

Proposed works in Brisbane Street would involve a $479,600 tree planting scheme that incorporated an innovative structural soil cell system and reflected a landscaping proposal for a future street redevelopment project.

"In 2011/2012, upgrades to the City's Urban Stormwater Drainage Network necessitated the removal of trees in Brisbane Street," Cr Griffiths said.

"It is proposed to replace these trees and plant them in the centre of the roadway to create a feature row of Rough-barked Apple trees (Angophora floribunda) in anticipation of the Brisbane Street Beautification Scheme."

Council would consult with businesses and the community prior to further development of the Brisbane Street Beautification Scheme.
