Community planting at Oasis Valley creates haven for native wildlife

Thursday, March 07, 2013

Oasis Valley at the Dubbo Regional Botanic Garden will grow to become a haven for native frogs and fish thanks to the work of the local community.
Forty volunteers from six community groups worked tirelessly on Monday, 4 March to help plant wetland plants along the new watercourse.
The 1st Dubbo Venturer Scouts came out in force accompanied by the West Dubbo Girl Guides, the Friends of the Dubbo Regional Botanic Garden, the Dubbo Macquarie River Bushcare Group, Dubbo Field Naturalist & Conservation Society, and University of the Third Age.
“The local community has made a major contribution to the success of this project,” Dubbo City Council’s Manager of Horticulture Services Ian McAlister said.
“The Oasis Valley is going to look fantastic for the official opening, which is planned for the coming weeks.”
Five wetland plant species were chosen for the watercourse with assistance from the Dubbo Field Naturalist & Conservation Society. In addition to providing refuge and shelter for frogs and fish, the plants will oxygenate the water and help keep it clean.
“The new wetland environment will become the focus of educational programs at the Dubbo Regional Botanic Garden and help students understand the importance of wetlands and their valuable contribution to the health of our waterways,” Mr McAlister said. Read More...
