Mayoral Memo - 10 April 2024

I am continually reminded of the profound impact leadership can have - not just in steering the course of policy and development but in the very fabric of our community's spirit. The role of a mayor extends beyond the governance of council meetings and the strategic planning of our city’s future. It embodies the potential to inspire, mobilise, and to lead by example, particularly when it comes to supporting causes that touch the lives of so many.

In the sphere of public service, the line between the beneficial and detrimental use of authority can sometimes blur, leading to decisions that may not always align with the community's best interests. The inclination to push through developments for the sake of progress can overshadow the necessity to consider the broader implications of such actions. It's crucial, therefore, to remain vigilant, ensuring that the powers vested in the office of the mayor are wielded with integrity, transparency, and a deep-seated commitment to the welfare of our constituents.

Conversely, when used judiciously, mayoral influence can serve as a beacon of positivity, galvanising community efforts towards noble causes. This week, I find myself in a position to do just that. I will be participating in an event that has significance to many within our community - 'Dancing with the Stars'. While my dance skills may very generously be described as modest, my enthusiasm for the cause it supports is boundless. This event is not merely a dance event; it's a concerted effort to raise much-needed funds for the Cancer Council, an organisation dedicated to fighting a disease that has touched the lives of every Australian.

In stepping out of my comfort zone and onto the dance floor, I aim to highlight the power of community and the impact we can achieve when we come together for a common purpose. The fight against cancer is a long and arduous one, but it is through events like these that we can contribute to making a significant difference.

I invite each of you to join me in this endeavour. Your support will not only bolster cancer research and support services but also reinforce the strength and compassion of our community. Donations can be made through the link at the end of this article. Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us one step closer to a cancer-free future.

The essence of mayoral duty extends far beyond the confines of the civic admin building. It's about harnessing the power of the position to foster unity, encourage civic engagement, and uplift those in need. I am committed to embodying these values, ensuring that our collective efforts leave a lasting imprint on the hearts and lives of those I am privileged to serve.

Together, let's make a difference - one step, one dance, one donation at a time.
