Gig State Project

Background Information

The New South Wales Government has committed $100 million for the Gig State project in Dubbo, Wagga Wagga, Parkes and a corridor west to Cobar, as well as a fibre solution for residents in Sutton, Bywong and Wamboin. The objective of the project is to deliver metro-level digital connectivity to regional NSW with improved price, quality of service and choice for regional businesses and communities. It will boost regional internet service with network infrastructure and increased fibre capacity in regional NSW, providing great benefits to rural and regional residents and businesses.

The Gig State project is one of three priority areas being progressed through the Regional Digital Connectivity Program, which will ensure families and businesses across regional NSW have better access to enjoy mobile, internet and digital services. It is a major turning point for connectivity and confirms the NSW Government’s commitment to deliver transformative infrastructure under the $4.2 billion Snowy Hydro Legacy Fund.

The newly formed Department of Regional NSW (DRNSW) will run a two-stage tender process for the Gig State project, starting with the initial target locations and then ideally being rolled out across more of regional NSW. The tender process will start with an Expression of Interest (EOI) launching in late April 2020 followed by a Request for Tender (RFT) later in 2020.

Gig State Expression of Interest Opportunity

Gig State outlines minimum service requirements for a proposed package of network services, including data hubs in the Dubbo Region and across regional NSW. The EOI outlines three key work packages to deliver an overall networked connectivity solution to open up network capacity:

  • Increase processing capability,
  • Improve service quality and reliability, and
  • Drive down service costs (for providers and end users).

The NSW Government is running a two-stage tender process – and EOI to seek feedback from the market on the proposed solution to inform the preparation of a Request for Tender (RFT). This EOI will identify eligible respondents to be shortlisted for the RFT to be released later in 2020.

DRNSW has uploaded the Gig State EOI to the NSW Government’s eTendering site, accessed at:

The EOI is open until 9:30am on 23 June 2020.
