Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) has invested over $7 million dollars to redevelop Dubbo’s Purvis Lane into a wider and safer transport link, providing a strategic connection for freight travelling from the Newell Highway to the growing northern industrial area.

Mayor of the Dubbo Region, Ben Shields said he was delighted with the near-complete $9.9 million project, which was achieved mostly through DRC funding, in collaboration with state and federal government funding.

“It’s great to see this long awaited project come to fruition. The existing road was originally constructed as a local access road to the former abattoir more than five decades ago and it was no longer suitable for the thousands of vehicles that use it each day, including large numbers of heavy vehicles,” said Councillor Shields.

The emphasis for this project has been “ease of access” with the further benefit of less trucks congesting the central parts of Dubbo as it also provides an alternative route between the Newell Highway and Golden Highway.

“I am so pleased that this project will benefit the industrial precinct of Dubbo and improve the safety of some of our busiest streets. Large heavy vehicles can now safely use Purvis Lane to move through the city, rather than enter an already busy Bourke and Erskine Streets.”

The redevelopment of Purvis Lane will have the added economic benefit of providing long term traffic flow growth.

“Dubbo Regional Council enthusiastically invested over $7 million to this vital infrastructure project. Improving access for heavy vehicles to major transport terminals will help drive business confidence in the Dubbo Region as we embark on our road to economic recovery,” said Councillor Shields.

The works to the 1.2km stretch of road included road surface widening, improvements to the flow capacity of the table drains and crossover culverts, installation of underground storm water infrastructure, as well as the installation of new LED street lighting.

Dubbo Regional Council commenced work on the Purvis Lane Redevelopment Project in 2018 and would like to thank the businesses and residents in the area for their co-operation and understanding during this essential upgrade and improvement to the road network.
