Cycle facility part of infrastructure boom for Dubbo
Tuesday saw the opening of the new Dubbo Regional Cycling Facility. It’s a state of the art $5.8 million facility that has a flat track, clubhouse and importantly, a criterion cycle track.
All of these great amenities will not only serve locals for years to come, but will attract thousands of competitors and their supporters from all over Australia.
This new facility really excites me. I’m told that it is a far better cycling centre than any other inland city in NSW - and that’s just what the number one city in inland NSW deserves. The feedback from the first couple of events held at the track has been very positive.
But with this new facility now up and running (or peddling and riding) it’s important that the Dubbo Region doesn’t just pat ourselves on the back and stop. We actually still have multiple projects that need investment and construction in order for Dubbo to keep our momentum going.
For example our Showground. We are so lucky to have such a historic showground in the centre of our city. However there is absolutely no doubt that a lot of the buildings and amenities are simply rundown and require a refurbishment or an entire rebuild.
The good news is that a masterplan has been created that includes a huge conference centre, remodelling of pavilions, landscaping and of course - better toilet blocks.
With new investment into the Showground, we can expect even more events, more organisations and more people wanting to come and visit our city. Right this minute your Council is chasing both federal and state governments for funding opportunities to make this important redevelopment of our Showground happen.
Another project that already has funding is our proposed riverbank boardwalk. The state government recently kicked in a multi-million dollar grant that will see a large boardwalk, new toilets, amphitheatre and beautification all built to flood-proof standards.
This work, which is proposed to be directly behind the CBD between the Wingewarra and Church Street sections of the Riverbank, will be the first major upgrade of the area for more than 50 years.
Once developed, we will be able to stroll the boardwalk over the water and enjoy the river up close. Mobile coffee carts and other vendors will be able to set up in an area that is destined to complement our CBD offerings.
There is also the fantastic plaza plan for the Old Dubbo Gaol, which will greatly enhance one of our region’s top tourist destinations and make it more prominent from Macquarie Street.
The Showground upgrade, riverbank boardwalk and Old Dubbo Gaol plaza are only just a few of the new projects that your Council is working on. I believe there never been a more exciting time in Dubbo.
With newly completed projects, projects about to start and projects that we are pushing for, we are no doubt becoming the number one city in inland NSW.
