Vandalism costly at popular youth facility
Council’s Manager of Recreation and Open Space Ian McAlister said that it is disappointing that the cost of repairing damage done by vandals is jeopardising the amenity of one of Dubbo’s most popular parks for youth.
“It is sad to say that the shade sails over the Victoria Park Skate Park have been removed due to a recent vandalism attack,” Mr McAlister said.
“This is the second vandalism attack on this very important piece of park infrastructure in the past eight months,” he said.
“The shades were only returned three weeks ago after being repaired and in that short space of time has been damaged again,”
“The repair bill for the first incident cost $10,000 and there is every reason to expect that the cost will be in a similar vein this time,” he said.
“Thankfully, CCTV cameras were installed recently and the incident has been reported to police,” he said.
“There are many young people in the community and visitors to the city who enjoy using the Skate Park and the shade sails were installed to make the area safer and more enjoyable particularly during summer months,” he said.
“At this stage Council are investigating as to whether it is cost effective to repair the sails if incidents of vandalism will be repeated,” he said.
