Community invited to a Picnic in the Park for Royal Visit

The Mayor of the Dubbo Region Ben Shields has invited the local community to a picnic in Victoria Park on Wednesday 17th October to welcome Their Royal Highnesses to the region.

The Mayor said the picnic in the park will offer a wonderful opportunity for people to be part of the historic Royal Visit to Dubbo and everyone is invited to attend.

“Dubbo’s Picnic in the Park will be a great day out for the whole region. Council staff have been working hard to ensure we deliver a great festive atmosphere with music and activities that celebrate our regional community,” Councillor Shields said.

Earlier that day, The Duke and Duchess will visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service and a local property to see first-hand the hardships local farmers are facing. Their Royal Highnesses will then travel to Victoria Park to join people from Dubbo and surrounding areas at a picnic to celebrate community spirit within the region.

“The Royal visit is a special time for Dubbo and we expect there will be a lot of people who want to be there when Their Royal Highnesses are in town,” Councillor Shields said.

Representatives at the picnic will include members of the community who have made special contributions in the services of youth, community and the environment, as well as organisations supporting people affected by drought.

“The magic of the Monarchy will draw attention in a way that no one else could. I expect the presence of The Duke and Duchess will be a massive morale boost for the community,” Councillor Shields said.

Dubbo’s Picnic in the Park will run for three hours from 11.30am with Their Royal Highnesses joining part of the event. There will be a number of activities taking place throughout the event including musical performances and food stalls, with all of the proceeds going to local charity.

"Much effort has also been made to provide safe pedestrian access and ensure traffic flows with as little impact as possible,” Councillor Shields said.

“Maps will be placed at key points around the City to ensure the public can plan their day. I encourage everyone to use the bus services and parking which will be made available at the Dubbo Showgrounds – parking close to Victoria Park will not be available and road closures will be enforced.”

The Mayor encouraged those travelling to the region to take an extra day to explore the Great Western Plains.
