Dubbo is ready to host NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout

Dubbo’s premier sporting complex Apex Oval will host over 100 teams as part of the 2018 NSW Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout again proving Dubbo and the city’s sporting facilities can host major sports events.

Mayor of the Dubbo Region Councillor Ben Shields will officially open the event on Friday 28 September welcoming players, coaches, managers, families and spectators from around NSW.

“Dubbo is expecting an influx of more than 10,000 visitors to the city over the long weekend to attend the Aboriginal Knockout which will be another great boost for the local economy,” Councillor Shields said.

“Council contributed in-kind support to ensure the grounds are in top condition and to support the logistics for managing such a major event. This investment helps generate significant economic activity for the region.”

“Over three nights, an estimated $2.5 million will be injected in to the local economy through food, petrol, entertainment and accommodation,” he said.

“Accommodation within Dubbo has been booked out for months with motel and other accommodation bookings spreading across the Dubbo LGA and region including Wellington, Narromine, Gilgandra, Orange and south to Parkes,” Councillor Shields said.

Tracey Whillock, Recreation Co odinator said Council staff have been busy preparing the complex, line marking, implementing traffic management plans, organising logistics for waste management, dismantling internal fences and placing temporary signage to ensure this large scale event operates smoothly.

“We are excited to host the NSW Knockout for the second time at Apex Oval, it shows our region certainly has the capacity to successfully host an event of such scale,” said Ms Whillock.

For visitors and residents there are plenty of opportunities to be involved with activities for children and elders to participate in alongside the football games.

It’s an alcohol free event with rides, stalls, activations from sponsors and a cultural celebration for the whole community.

The event will also be broadcast on multiple platforms across the weekend including nationally through NITV.
