Mayor thrilled Royal couple choose to visit Dubbo
Mayor of the Dubbo Region Ben Shields has welcomed a decision by Prince Harry and Meghan the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, to include Dubbo in their Australian visit in October.
Their Royal Highnesses will be in Dubbo on Wednesday, October 17 as part of a 10-day tour of the country. Councillor Shields said it was a major coup for the city to attract the recently married couple.
“I know there will be a lot of excited people around the city who will be keen to give Prince Harry and Meghan Markle a big welcome,” Councillor Shields said.
“Dubbo has a proud tradition of attracting members of the Royal Family to our city, including visits by the Queen and Prince Philip in 1954 and 1992 and this occasion will join the folklore.”
Councillor Shields said a more detailed itinerary wasn't available for their visit as yet but he was hopeful the couple would get to see plenty of the city during their stay.
Their Royal Highnesses are coming to Australia for the Invictus Games and will land in Sydney on Tuesday, 16 October, heading to Dubbo on Wednesday, 17 October before travelling to Melbourne the following day.
“This is a massive coup for Dubbo. Council has been working behind the scenes to make a strong case for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to come to Dubbo and I am delighted that we have been successful,” Councillor Shields said.
“When it emerged that they were possibly considering a visit to regional Australia as part of their tour, plenty of towns and cities put their hand up but Dubbo has outshone them all.
“Our economic development team is still working with all levels of government and other parties to ensure our visitors have a fantastic stay.”
