Official Dedication and Blessing of Centenary of Armistice Memorial

Dubbo Regional Council, in conjunction with the Dubbo RSL Sub-branch, will conduct an official unveiling and dedication of a Memorial to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Centenary of Armistice Day.

Mayor of the Dubbo Region Ben Shields said Remembrance Day 2018 signifies 100 years since the armistice was declared and hostilities ceased in World War I and this important date in history should be commemorated.

“We know that 256 servicemen and women from Dubbo died in action or as a result of wounds or illness during World War I,” Councillor Shields said. “However, many people right across our region and millions throughout the world, both military and civilian, were killed, wounded and personally affected by the war.

“Armistice Day is an important date in history to be remembered, especially for all those people who gave their lives so that we have the freedoms we each enjoy today,” Councillor Shields said.

Dubbo Regional Council formed a Centenary of Armistice Committee in with representatives of the RSL Sub-Branch in order to ensure appropriate recognition is given to this anniversary and commissioned a new Memorial for Victoria Park.

Councillor Shields said the Memorial consists of two sandstone columns with bronzed decorations, in keeping with the memorials already established in Victoria Park.

”The bronze Waratahs on the Cenotaph are replicated on the Centenary of Armistice Memorial to create a strong connection between the two structures and the result is a striking new Memorial,” he said.

The community is invited to attend the official unveiling of the Centenary of Armistice Memorial at 10.00 am on Friday 9 November 2018.
