Thirty local residents this week became Australian citizens in a special ceremony conducted Dubbo Regional Mayor Councillor Ben Shields.

Councillor Shields said citizenship “demonstrates your personal loyalty and commitment to Australia and its people”.

“These taking the pledge today have expressed a willingness to share and support our democratic beliefs, respect our rights and liberties and uphold and obey our laws,” said Councillor Shields. “We welcome them both as Australian citizens and as member of the Dubbo community.”

Councillor Shields said the new citizens originally from China, Iran, United States, Turkey, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Taiwan, Philippines added to the diversity of Dubbo.

Arshpreet and Prabhjot Thind, originally from India, and their Australian-born daughter Avneet were among the 28 to receive their citizenship certificate.

The family moved to Dubbo three years ago after experiencing life in India. Arshpreet and Prabhjot are both employed in hospitality and hope one day to open their own business.

They enjoy the country lifestyle of Dubbo and the city’s open spaces. “It’s our community now,” they say after experiencing a friendly welcome to the region from many helpful people.

“We’ll be trying our best to do something really great as Australian citizens,” they said.

And Avneet, 5, is looking forward to commencing school as an Australia citizen next year.
