Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) has won the award for Economic Development Initiatives category in the 2019 National Economic Development Awards for Excellence.

DRC’s Great Business Program was nominated for the category, and with a record number of entries this year, to be named a finalist is a big achievement.

“To see the Dubbo Region named as a winner in yet another national award goes to show that Dubbo is working hard for our community with great positive, tangible results for businesses,” said Deputy Mayor of the Dubbo Region Councillor Stephen Lawrence.

The Great Business Program was developed in consultation with a range of local businesses and industry stakeholders to provide a practical and useful businesses program, with the aim of assisting local businesses to ensure profitability and sustainability.

Dubbo Regional Council realised there were very few, if any, affordable, practical and useful business development programs run for small businesses in this part of Regional Australia. There was nothing to help local businesses battle through various economic headwinds such as weak consumer sentiment, increasing costs, an extremely drawn out drought and sluggish retail sales,” Clr Lawrence said.

The Great Business Program is a joint initiative of Dubbo Regional Council, Dubbo Chamber of Commerce and Wellington Business Chamber.

Dubbo Regional Council has been working alongside the Business Chamber in Dubbo and the Chamber of Commerce in Wellington to help encourage local spending.

Recently, Council launched the MyDubbo Region Shopping Card in Wellington, with a competition to help incentivise people to buy local.

“Up until 7 November, anyone who spends $20 or more in a participating Wellington store, can go in the draw to win one of ten $500 MyDubbo Region Shopping cards, which can be redeemed in any participating store,” said Clr Lawrence.

In addition to this, Council is also busily preparing for the busy Christmas period, with an exciting new program that will keep businesses, kids and parents happy.

“The exact details are still top secret at the moment, but I can assure you, it’s going to be worth the wait,” Clr Lawrence said.
