NEW PLAYGROUND OPENS IN WELLINGTON

Mayor of the Dubbo Region Ben Shields will officially open the new playground at Bicentennial Park, Wellington.

“I am delighted that the highly anticipated Bicentennial playground will be officially opened and available to be enjoyed by all. This is a very exciting new facility for the Wellington community,” Clr Shields said.

The new playground is situated on the South East corner of Bicentennial Park in Montefiores, Wellington which is frequented by many nearby residents with young families and local sporting clubs.

The local residents were given the opportunity to choose from two concepts through a community consultation BBQ hosted by Dubbo Regional Council in April 2019. The two options were on display and residents of all ages were able to vote on their preferred design. The community selected the design by Moduplay.

The selected design provides play equipment for all ages, and has been specifically designed to complement and integrate the existing natural mounds of Bicentennial Park.

Dubbo Regional Council’s Open Space Co-ordinator Benjamin Pilon said the space also has considerations for accessibility.

“When designing new play spaces it’s important to consider access for all abilities. This space includes a fully accessible concrete path, providing access to the existing canteen and amenity block. Integration of wet pour rubber further provides access to key accessible play elements such as; 15m Sky rider (flying fox), inclusive nest swing and all access free standing activity play panels,” Mr Pilon said.

“The remaining elements are of natural timber and incorporates natural bark soft fall; a zig zag slalom, balance beam and timber steppers. There is also integration of naturalised sandstone slabs and boulders together with native grasses. The stone and plantings have been used to retain and soften the steep embankments and provide further play and seating opportunities within the space,” he said.

This new playground has been fully funded through the Dubbo Regional Council’s Capital works budget and is available to play from today!
