Newcastle Jets and Sydney FC to go head to head in Dubbo

Dubbo Regional Council has confirmed Saturday 21 September as the date for the Newcastle Jets and Sydney FC to set Apex Park alight with a powerhouse game of football as an A-league pre-season curtain-raiser.

“Council is delighted to have been able to secure two of the nation’s top teams’ to our city,” Mayor, Councillor Ben Shields said.

“There’s no doubt our region is passionate about sports and given the facilities, accommodation and audience we have on offer, why should we only enjoy great events like this on TV when we can host them and go the actual game?”

Newcastle and Sydney supporters wouldn’t be disadvantaged by a pre-season away game with the region providing a number of options for fans to travel to Dubbo and support their teams.

“Fly Pelican is in a perfect position to provide a direct flight from Newcastle to Dubbo and I welcome their involvement in supporting this event,” Clr Shields said.

“With regular flights from Sydney to Dubbo, we’re the gateway to western NSW – so supporters from the city should make a weekend of it and absolutely enjoy our region while out here.”

“To bring this class of football out to regional NSW is not only great for the fans, it’s great for the players,” Lawrie McKinna, CEO for the Jets, said. “If we can encourage the growth of potential talent among younger people and attract a stronger more diverse fan-base in our game among people from the country, then it can only be a win-win situation for us.”

Tickets will soon go on sale for the event already being billed as one to watch as both teams focus on improving their line-up, performance and tactics on the back of last year’s season.

“It’s definitely one for fans and for those in and around our region who want to see some top-tier sport and events,” Clr Shields said.  “The Dubbo Region is an excellent location for big ticket drawcards and events like this and we’ll certainly be encouraging more of them well into the future. Events like this bring a great return for organisers and sponsors, importantly, locals and visitors have access to a great experience not regularly available in our region.”
