Dubbo Regional Council is spending more than $50,000 to replace vandalised shade sails at the Victoria Park skate park.

Higher supporting steel posts will be erected before the new fire retardant sails are attached in Council’s third replacement of sails damaged by vandals in five years.

“This time we are raising the height of supporting poles to minimise any future damage,” said acting manager recreation and open space Ben Pilon.

“Skate park users have been inconvenienced too often by the senseless damage to the sails by vandals and council then has to divert money and staff from other important community projects to repair or replace damaged infrastructure.”

Mayor of the Dubbo Region Councillor Ben Shields said: “The costs for Council are significant every time our staff are faced with the damage caused by idiotic vandals with no regard for other people in our community.

“These senseless acts at the skate park alone have cost Council more than $70,000 in recent years,” Councillor Shields said.

“We have CCTV camera covering the skate park and all incidents of vandalism are reported to police.”

Dubbo Regional Council offers a reward of up to $2500 for information leading to the conviction of any person who has committed wilful damage or theft of Council property.
