Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) can add another feather to its cap for its outstanding tourism industry, with Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) staff excited to learn that Dubbo has been named the best regional holiday destination for families in all of Australia by Out & About With Kids magazine. Mayor of the Dubbo Region, Councillor Ben Shields, says that Winter and Spring School Holiday visitation for 2020 was exceptionally good, and this latest accolade will make the Dubbo Region even hotter property for Australian families.

“To know that Dubbo has topped the country as the people’s choice for best regional destination for families is just phenomenal. Our Region is up in lights with the likes of some impressive domestic and international destinations” said Councillor Shields.

The win is further validated by an incredibly busy Spring School Holiday season, with many families choosing to holiday at home and explore regional destinations. It was the busiest season for the Great Big Adventure Pass, which sold the highest number of tickets since its launch just over 12 months ago. And although COVID-19 restrictions meant that tours were reduced at the Wellington Caves, it was still a very busy holiday period with visitation to the Caravan Park up by 279 people on the same period last year.

The Out & About With Kids 2020 Readers’ Choice Awards received more than 80,000 votes cast by readers across 42 categories, highlighting that family travel is a significant and growing audience, particularly for adventure holidays. The publication is a quarterly print magazine, with digital subscribers and a significant social media following. The magazine’s publisher Elisa Elwin says that the annual winners of its competition shows what destinations are making waves in the holiday scene.

Our annual Readers’ Choice Awards provide a valuable opportunity for that market to have their say.  Every year we see firm family favourites emerge, but we also gain insight into the shifts and emerging trends in family holidays, which are reflected in readers’ choices,” said Ms Elwin.

With the aim of maintaining the positive momentum experienced in the Dubbo Region’s tourism sector, DRC has launched a new marketing campaign encouraging residents in neighbouring Western towns to take some time to enjoy Dubbo like tourists during their next visit.

“Typically regional visitation has great economic value to the market as a whole and these regular visitors may be spending on household and professional services during some of their visits to the Region.” said Councillor Shields.

With a focus on retail and hospitality the campaign encourages visitors to explore hundreds of shops, their favourite big brands and specialty stores. Or to take time out to relax over a long lunch, or let the kids lead the way to the parks, new playgrounds or a popular tourist attraction.

“Encouraging our Western neighbours to spend some time in Dubbo as a tourist is a great opportunity, this latest campaign is designed to provide economic support for local businesses, while also providing a safe and accessible destination for our Western neighbours to take time out and enjoy themselves.” said Councillor Shields.

This targeted campaign was developed as a key outcome of the strategy developed by the Dubbo Region Economic Recovery Taskforce and features a TV campaign, digital marketing and an upcoming direct mail campaign.
