Protected reserves along the Macquarie River and inland from it shield plant and animal communities while still ensuring public access to the river environments.
Council’s reserve system does more than protect the river environment, with reserves protecting Grassy Box Woodlands, Ironbark/Cypress forests, Rocky Slopes and Pilliga Outwash forests, many of these being endangered ecosystems.
It’s this diversity that makes these reserves and protected lands very interesting places; you’ll find unusual and beautiful plants, animals and birds.
Animals including kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, wombats and koalas can be found within the boundaries of Council. Rare and beautiful plants such as orchids, daisies, cycads, lilies and grasses are also present. Rare and endangered ecosystems are a feature of our landscape.
Rare birds can be found such as the Regent Honeyeater, Mallee Fowl, Speckled Warbler, Grey Crowned Babbler, Barking and Powerful Owls, Hooded and Red Breasted Robins, Diamond Firetails, Brown Tree Creepers, Rufous and Gilberts Whistlers, Painted Snipe, a broad range of Honeyeaters and even the fabled Grey Falcon.
