BUSINESSES SAVE MONEY AND REDUCE LANDFILL BY USING DRC KERBSIDE ORGANIC WASTE SERVICE

Local businesses can save money and divert waste from landfill by using Dubbo Regional Council’s (DRC) commercial collection service for food organics and garden organics (FOGO).

The FOGO collection is a kerbside service available to all commercial businesses in the local government area where DRC will provide 240 litre green lid bins, and collect them weekly at a cost of $134 per bin per annum. Businesses can also arrange a twice weekly collection for an additional cost.

DRC’s Manager Resource Recovery and Efficiency, John Wisniewski said the organics bins were a sustainable and cost-effective resource for business owners to consider.

“Perhaps some people aren’t aware this service is available for commercial use, but switching from general waste red lid bins to FOGO bins is convenient, it could save you $93 per bin per year and it’s good for the environment by keeping organics out of landfill,” said Mr Wisniewski. “The FOGO bin contents are sent to the Dubbo Regional Organics Processing Plant where they’re transformed into a good quality compost product.”

“Besides saving money, making the switch is also a good step for businesses wanting to take social and environmental responsibility, so it’s a win-win.”

Manager of Bourke Street Butchery Ray Pearson said they started using the service about a month ago to dispose of their organic waste.

“We made the switch for hygiene purposes more than anything, we had the fat and bones previously sitting in a landfill skip out the back and the smell became a bit of an issue,” said Mr Pearson. “We now keep the green bins in a refrigerated container so it doesn’t smell and it gets collected twice a week.

“It’s more hygienic, the bins are much easier to clean, it’s more cost-effective and it’s good to know the waste is now going to the right spot instead of to landfill.”
