ART IN CONFLICT EXHIBITION AT WPCC

A new touring exhibition from the Australian War Memorial titled Art in Conflict is now showing at the Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC) until 14 January 2024.

Art in Conflict is an exhibition of contemporary art from the collection of the Australian War Memorial and so far, visitors to the Western Plains Cultural Centre have been really enjoying this exhibition and the array of works on display,” Dubbo Regional Council Cultural Development Coordinator Jessica Moore said.

The exhibition showcases a diverse response to war and includes more than 70 paintings, drawings, films, prints, photos and sculptures. The exhibition features artworks from leading Australia artists including Khadim Ali, Rushdi Anwar, eX de Medici, Denise Green, Richard Lewer, Mike Parr, Tony Albert, Paddy Bedford, Robert Campbell Jr, Michael Cook, Shirley Macnamara and Betty Muffler.

The Art in Conflict exhibition surveys the contemporary artists’ responses to conflict bringing to light untold stories, revealing neglected histories and deepening our understanding of Australia’s experience of conflict, both past and present.

War art invites the viewer to encounter new perspectives and deepen their understanding of the complexity and consequences of war.

Art in Conflict, with its deeply impactful subject matter is a beautiful, contemplative exhibition that gives us each space to really look and think deeply about Australia’s role in international events and conflicts.

“It doesn’t shy away from the poignancy or difficulty of questioning our role and the impact it has on us and those we engage with.”

“The Australian War Memorial is one of our most important cultural and historical institutions; through its work it has directly shaped how we think of Australian identity and war and through this exhibition we see how the Australian War Memorial is including more diverse voices and perspectives on warfare - who it impacts, who participates and how we question our role as international citizens,” Ms Moore said.

Art in Conflict is on exhibition at WPCC from 4 November 2023 – 14 January 2024. Art in Conflict is an Australian War Memorial Touring Exhibition.
