RESIDENTS REMINDED TO CHECK WHAT THEY FLUSH

Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) is reminding residents that wet wipes, tissues, paper towels, napkins, cotton buds and sanitary products cannot be flushed down toilet systems and must be disposed in a rubbish bin.

Unlike toilet paper, these products are not designed to break down in water, causing significant blockages and expensive home plumbing issues for residents and mains repair costs for Council.

DRC Manager Operations Water Supply and Sewerage, Bec Eade, said that Council has attended 327 sewer blockages this year occurring in Council’s sewer mains outside of residential property boundaries which has resulted in significant costs to Council to rectify and urges all residents to check what they flush to avoid potential blockages.

“I’d like to remind residents that only the 3Ps should be going into the toilet system: Pee, Poo and toilet Paper. Flushing anything else has the capacity to block the internal drainage pipes and Council sewer mains, which will result in significant costs to either the resident or Council.”

“We obviously want to avoid both of these scenarios,” Ms Eade said.

DRC provides resources to the community which aims to clarify Council’s service obligations and responsibilities of residents and homeowners in regard to sewerage services.

“I encourage everyone to view Council’s website in relation to water and sewerage. We have some great information which clearly defines everyone’s responsibilities and tips for ensuring the continual efficient operation of our sewerage system. If you’d like a hardcopy, come in to one of our Customer Experience Centres and we’d be more than happy to assist you,” said Ms Eade.
