WESTERN PLAINS CULTURAL CENTRE OPEN DAY

To celebrate NSW Education Week from 31 July – 4 August 2023, the Western Plains Cultural Centre will be hosting on Open Day on Wednesday 2 August 2023 from 11am – 2pm.

The Open Day will allow school groups and the community to be able to view the 1950s classroom, learn about education from times gone by and have a free lesson on using a dip pen and ink. Visitors to the centre can also participate in 1950s games in the courtyard at the Open Day including skittles, kingpin, elastics, snakes and ladders, and skipping ropes. There will also be free 15-minute tours of the museum space will highlight Dubbo High School features and artefacts.

“This year’s NSW Education Week is celebrating 175 years of public education and what better way to celebrate that than in the old Dubbo High School site and stepping back in time with a lesson in the 1950s classroom,” Dubbo Regional Council’s (DRC) Education Officer, Rebecca Walker said.

“We invite both school groups and members of the community to come along to our Open Day at the Western Plains Cultural Centre and see what the centre has on offer.”

“It may also be an opportunity for some members of the community to reminisce about their time at Dubbo High.”

Schools are encouraged to book into a session for the open day to take advantage of a free dip pen and ink lesson.

The 1950s classroom provides a hands-on learning experience where students can interact with old suitcases, sports equipment, try on an old school uniform or open and close the desks as they imagine themselves learning in times gone by.

“The 1950s classroom is a unique asset of the Western Plains Cultural Centre and takes students back in time to see what a classroom was like before technology became part of the learning experience,” said Mrs Walker.

“Whilst at the Western Plains Cultural Centre why not take in the Astley Cup exhibition featuring photographs and memorabilia from the cup’s 100-year history or wander through the museum on a self-guided tour to view the objects relating to Dubbo’s history including items from Dubbo High School’s past.”
