FUTURE FOCUSED WASTE STRATEGY ON PUBLIC EXHIBITION
Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) is focused on planning for the future with the development of the 2024 – 2034 Waste Strategy. The Waste Strategy provides strategic direction for the Dubbo Region on waste management services and is now on public exhibition for the community to have their say.
“The Waste Strategy will provide a blueprint for reducing waste sent to landfill and for ongoing progressive, sustainable, collaborative and responsible waste management services in the Dubbo region,” DRC’s Manager Resource Recovery and Efficiency, Jamie Lobb said.
Council currently diverts 45 per cent of all materials managed from landfill with the aim to increase that to 80 per cent by 2030 as part of the proposed Waste Strategy.
Waste disposed to landfill is DRC’s leading source of greenhouse gas emissions within its operations, contributing 62 per cent of Council’s carbon footprint.
The Waste Strategy looks at changing perceptions, with the aim to view waste as a resource and consider how materials can be reused in a circular economy and reduce the percentage of waste to landfill.
The Waste Strategy includes all current aspects of Waste Operations that occur within the Dubbo region such as generation, collection, transportation, processing and disposal. The strategy also includes changes that will need to be implemented to align with fast-moving changes in policy, regulation and markets within the waste industry.
The strategy aims to guide delivery of its services over the next five years within a broader 10-year plan. It will also explore local transformation of waste rather than exporting it for processing outside the region.
“We are passionate about transforming our waste services and working with our community to create significant impact for the future.”
“The strategy provides a direction for the Dubbo region as we move towards a future where placing materials into landfill will be a last option.”
“Waste is produced by every member of the community, so it is important that the community takes this opportunity to review the proposed Waste Strategy and have their say about the future of waste management in our region.”
“Each of the various actions within the Waste Strategy will be rolled out over the coming years and we will communicate to the community on future trials and programs,” Mr Lobb said.
Following the public exhibition period the feedback with be reviewed, the strategy revised and then presented to a future Council meeting for consideration.
The Waste Strategy 2024 – 2034 can be viewed at yoursay.dubbo.nsw.gov.au/2024-waste-strategy with the opportunity to have your say closing Monday 7 October at 9am.
