WASTE 2 ART COMPETITION ENTRIES NOW OPEN

It’s time to transform rubbish into art and design once again with entries to the annual Waste 2 Art community art competition now open.

The purpose of Waste 2 Art is to encourage everyone to reduce, reuse and recycle with a focus on behavioural change about the things people throw away. This year’s theme is ‘The Year of Packaging’.

There are several categories for primary and secondary school students as well as community members and professional artists in the Open category. These include two dimensional, three dimensional and functional artworks. Students can also make their art at home and then select primary or secondary when entering. Entries close on 3 May 2024.

The Waste 2 Art exhibition will be held in the Western Plains Cultural Centre from 25 May – 21 July 2024 with the official opening on Saturday 1 June 2024 at 2pm.

According to the Supply Chain Solutions Centre 2023, 91 per cent of packaging waste is sent to landfill or into the environment.

“This year’s theme is all about packaging so think soft plastics, bubble wrap, boxes, manufacturing and consumerism,” Dubbo Regional Council Curator Officer Mariam Abboud said.

“Waste 2 Art is an innovative competition that allows schools, community groups and individuals to get involved and turn rubbish into art.”

“As part of the Waste 2 Art competition this year the Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC) is opening the art studio during March for schools and early learning centres to come and begin work on their Waste 2 Art creations for this year’s competition,” Ms Abboud said.

Students can work with environmental artist Ronda Sharpe, who showcased her work at the WPCC last year. Her artwork draws on Wiradjuri culture and language through adopting an environmentally sustainable approach to combining customary weaving techniques with recycled material.

In addition, Dubbo Regional Council’s Waste Recovery Education Officer Hamish Campbell will provide an informative talk on how students can go about recycling in their own day to day lives. These workshops are free and run for two hours. Some materials will be supplied, however if there is any specific packaging you wish to utilise for your entry, please bring it along to the workshop. Workshops will be held from 20 – 21 March and 27 – 28 March with two sessions 9am – 11am and 12pm – 2pm. Maximum of 25 students per workshop.
