SCOREBOARD PROGRAM BRINGS NEW ART TO WPCC ENTRANCE

A new artwork has been installed at the entrance to the Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC) highlighting partnerships and connections within the Dubbo community.

The artwork is part of the WPCC’s Scoreboard program.

The program was initially conceived to provide local artists and community groups who were unable to secure or provide an exhibition at the WPCC an opportunity to display their art at the centre in a public art style.

Dubbo Regional Council Education Officer Rebecca Walker said the art was installed at the entrance to the centre on three large weatherproof boards that had been provided blank to the selected artist.

“It also has the added benefit of providing an engaging first impression to visitors of the WPCC, which we hope then encourages them to enter to see other exhibitions in the spaces inside,” Mrs Walker said.

The latest Scoreboard program aimed to connect disengaged young males in the Dubbo region, who were also involved in the Boys to the Bush mentorship program, with local Indigenous artist Hayden Wood.

“Through the use of art, the program has allowed them to connect to culture, an artistic male mentor and one another.

“The collaborative work will be displayed at the WPCC, providing an additional connection to community while assisting these young men to understand that their artistic pursuits are a valuable way to connect to others, themselves, their emotions and their past and future through art,” Mrs Walker said.

The Scoreboard program will be a yearly opportunity through the WPCC to connect local artists with groups seeking to create artworks that provide a means of social connection, inspiration, mental health support or the accompaniment to social outreach and education within the Dubbo region.

Groups will be selected via a panel and connected with artists in the community on a case-by-case basis to best match them depending on their unique needs.

Expressions of interest for next year will open in September. For further information groups and artists can get in contact with the WPCC.

The program is supported through Create NSW and is developed through the Dubbo Regional Council’s Cultural Plan.
