FAST FASHION THE FOCUS OF WASTE 2 ART EXHIBITION

The annual Waste 2 Art exhibition is now on at the Western Plains Cultural Centre until 28 May 2023. The exhibition features over 80 entries from primary and high school students through to community groups and individuals.

This year Waste 2 Art theme was ‘Textile & Fast Fashion’ and encompasses any discarded clothing or materials that generally becomes disposable after numerous uses or with the changing of fashion trends.

“Waste 2 Art has now been running for over 20 years and continues to highlight key waste, sustainability and environmental issues in a creative way,” said Western Plains Cultural Centre Curator, Mariam Abboud.

“The aim of the program is to challenge peoples’ perceptions about rubbish and to celebrate the reuse and recycling of waste through arts and crafts. Instead of ending up in landfill, waste materials can be turned into fantastic works of art.”

Waste 2 Art is a NetWaste initiative, sponsored by SIMS Metal. Dubbo Regional Council is a proud NetWaste member and supports a community commitment to re-use and recycle through creative expression.

“The Waste 2 Art exhibition is a colourful collection of artworks which can be enjoyed by people of all ages.”

“Seeing how a creative mind can take a problem and start to find a solution and learn some valuable lessons that can help us change our waste management behaviour is truly thought provoking,” said Mariam.

The Waste 2 Art official opening will be held on Saturday 18 March at 2pm. Book your tickets online at www.123tix.com.au. The official opening is a free event and will see competition winners announced.

Waste 2 Art is a SPARC Cultural Plan initiative of Dubbo Regional Council, which collaborates across council divisions to integrate creative elements into existing programs including sustainability, road safety, bushcare and community services.
