MAUREEN: HARBINGER OF DEATH TO PLAY IN DUBBO ON TUESDAY 28 MARCH AT DUBBO REGIONAL THEATRE

The acclaimed one-person show Maureen: Harbinger of Death comes to Dubbo for its only regional performance directly from its season at the 2023 Adelaide Festival.

Since its rapturous reception at the 2022 Sydney Festival, Festival directors all over the country have been clamouring to present this critically acclaimed piece from writer/performer Jonny Hawkins.  The show played at the 2022 Melbourne and Darwin Festivals and will have its international premiere in New Zealand directly following its Dubbo performance.

With exquisite storytelling, writer and performer Jonny transforms into Maureen: a razor-tongued doyenne of Kings Cross in its heyday. Co-created by Nell Ranney, this poignantly funny solo show takes inspiration from Hawkins’ friend, a self-described “working class glamour queen” and one of life’s true eccentrics.

Seated in her bohemian living room, Maureen takes you on an intimate journey brimming with witty repartee, well-worn life advice, an exotic array of friends now gone and the dauntless potency of limitless imagination.

“I am excited to bring Maureen to Dubbo and share with audiences her wisdom, vitality and wicked sense of humour,” writer and performer Jonny Hawkins said.

Maureen is a night of wit, imagination and storytelling with a character you won’t forget, brought to you by the producers of the annual Wharf Revue and The Gospel According to Paul.

“This performance aligns well with our 2023 Season theme of Dare to be Different. It has a similar feel to Giantess that we presented in 2019 which evoked a lot of deep feeling, compassion and discussion afterwards. It’s certainly not melancholic, but playful, raw and truthful. For those who want to see more non-mainstream works, this is for you, for others, dare to be different and come and see it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised,” Manager, Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre, Linda Christof said.
