SIGN UP FOR WATER NIGHT 2023

Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) is encouraging residents to sign up for this year’s Water Night that will take place on Thursday 19 October from 5pm – 10pm during National Water Week.

Water Night is a nationwide event that aims to raise awareness of water use in Australia. Residents simply sign up their household to the event and then turn off all taps and running water for the five hours between 5pm – 10pm on the night.

“Water Night is a great conversation starter for families about the importance of water as a resource and why being mindful and reducing water usage is vital,” Dubbo Regional Council Manager Operations Water Supply and Sewerage, Bec Eade.

Research by The Water Conservancy shows Australia’s water literacy is very low and so is the perceived value of tap water. All life on earth relies on water to survive yet only 42 per cent of Australians consider tap water to be precious.

“With the forecast for drier conditions this summer it is essential we look at ways to conserve water as a community. If everyone makes one or two small changes at home it will make a big difference overall.”

This could be as simple as taking shorter showers, making sure your dishwasher is full when you turn it on, turning the tap off when you brush your teeth and watering your garden in the coolest part of the day such as the early morning or evening.

“Water Night is designed to be the start of long-term behaviour change and for residents to build their water literacy and awareness, and ultimately help Australians value water more as a vital resource.”

“We would encourage residents to sign up to the Water Night challenge and consider their water usage and what changes they can make around the home to reduce their overall water consumption in the future.”

“Water Night isn’t focused on being restrictive or depriving people of water, so we encourage residents to pre-fill water bottles or containers in preparation for the event,” Mrs Eade said.

Dubbo Regional Council is a proud supporter of Water Night. For more information or to sign up your household visit waternight.com.au.
