NEW EXHIBITIONS REIMAGINE TEXTILES AND INTERESTING OBJECTS AT WPCC

A major exhibition featuring works by twelve leading Australian artists who reimagine textiles and fibre art is now on at Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC).

The exhibition, Pliable Planes: Expanded Textiles & Fibre Practices, presents the work of eight contemporary artists who incorporate and experiment with different traditional textile approaches, including weaving, embroidery, knitting, and sewing.

Commissioned by UNSW Galleries, the exhibition includes works by Akira Akira, Sarah Contos, Lucia Dohrmann, Mikala Dwyer, Janet Fieldhouse, Teelah George, Paul Knight, Anne-Marie May, John Nixon, Kate Scardifield, Jacqueline Stojanović and Katie West.

“The exhibition unites the work of practitioners who disrupt our understanding of how textiles and fibre are defined and used in contemporary practice,” UNSW Galleries exhibition co-curator Karen Hall said.

“The exhibition highlights dynamic approaches to making from artists who weave with porcelain, unravel paintings on canvas, and create sonic representations of needlepoint.”

Also on exhibition at WPCC is 1x4, an exhibition that explores the narrative of objects, with each object on display telling four distinct stories.

Featuring unlabelled items, including a racing saddle, Sunbeam Mixmaster and snuff box, visitors to the museum space can simply observe and admire the object or scan a QR code to read or listen to one or all four stories about the item.

“As curators in a museum, we interpret and tell stories about objects, and this exhibition highlights this by allowing people to see the object from different perspectives,” WPCC Curator Kent Buchanan said.

“Some are everyday objects, others more obscure, and the four stories attached to the objects are all fascinating, true, yet all very different. Each person’s view of an object differs and the 1X4 exhibition acknowledges this.”

“These two new exhibitions help support the goal of the Dubbo Regional Council Cultural Plan – SPARC, to showcase new, innovative and robust creative experiences in the region.”

The exhibition was developed by Newcastle Museum and was named the National Winner at the 2021 Museums and Galleries National Awards (MAGNA). It is on display at WPCC until 5 November 2023.

Pliable Planes: Expanded Textiles & Fibre Practices is a UNSW Galleries touring exhibition presented with the support of the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia touring initiative, the Australia Council for the Arts, and Museums & Galleries NSW on behalf of the NSW Government. Pliable Planes is on display at WPCC until 15 October 2023.
