WOULD YOU LIKE THE WELLINGTON RHINO TO BE REPLACED?

Wellington residents are being encouraged to complete a survey to assist Council in determining how the rhino in Cameron Park will be replaced.

As part of the broader rhino renewal project Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) has a $5000 budget for the renewal of Wellington’s rhino and with community involvement important to Council we are asking for input to understand what the Wellington community would like to see in Cameron Park or surrounding areas.

“We have heard from the community at different times about their rhino and what they would like to see in that space,” DRC Mayor Mathew Dickerson said.

“Because there have been a number of differing views, we are asking the community if they would like to see an updated rhino or if they would like something else done with that money.”

Options in the survey include:

  • a new rhino with artwork designed by a local school student and painted by a local artist,
  • the purchase of plants for a renewal of the Sunken Gardens,
  • another cultural object, such as a sculpture, with local artists invited to submit expressions of interest up to $5000 in value,
  • a platypus mural in the CBD painted in collaboration with the community.

The Rhino Adventure sculpture trail was created in 2014 spanning the region from Bathurst to Dubbo including Wellington.

The survey marks the start of the renewal project for the Wellington rhino and will close at 9am on Tuesday 16 January 2024.

The original Wellington rhino featured artwork by Jack Randall and local St Mary’s Catholic School student Marissa Stanley and was affectionally named ‘Arthur’ after Mt Arthur near Wellington.
