CLEAR THE AIR AND BURN SMART THIS WINTER
As winter temperatures drop, Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) is encouraging residents to take a moment to check their chimneys and ensure their wood heaters are operating cleanly and efficiently.
Director Development and Environment Steve Jennings said that while wood heaters offer warmth and comfort in the cooler months, they can also contribute to harmful woodsmoke pollution if not used correctly.
“Woodsmoke pollution isn’t just a nuisance, it can have serious health impacts.
“People with respiratory conditions such as asthma, as well as young children and older adults, are particularly vulnerable.
There’s also growing evidence linking smoke pollution to heart problems,” Mr Jennings said.
Council is asking residents to step outside and check their chimneys regularly during winter.
Ideally, a chimney should emit no visible smoke, just a faint heat haze. Even older heaters, if operated correctly, should only release a thin, wispy smoke.
Mr Jennings said that thick or obvious smoke coming from your flue means your heater isn’t operating as efficiently as it should be.
“A few simple changes can improve heater performance and cut down the smoke, which benefits not only your household but also your neighbours.” Mr Jennings said.
