MAKE LONG TERM PLASTIC FREE SOLUTIONS STARTING IN JULY

Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) is getting behind the plastic free movement and encouraging members of the community to get involved in Plastic Free July this year, while also turning their attention to what they can do all year round.

DRC Mayor Josh Black said the month is an important one for our environment.

“We want people to be part of the solution to plastic pollution all year around, not just for one month of the year. By getting rid of single use plastic, you are helping keep our streets cleaner for our entire community.

“July is a great month to get started with something that you can continue doing throughout the year. Get yourself a keep cup for your morning coffee and support our businesses that support the environment or grab a reusable bag for your shopping and reduce recycling and landfill.

“There are so many ways we can all make a difference to reduce the use of single use plastics, which will really make our local environment better in the long term,” Clr Black said.

This year plastic free July is focusing on ways that people can be part of the Plastic Free solution and asking people to make changes that form long term solutions.

At the bakery, plan ahead and avoid pre-packed bread, head to the butcher and grab fresh meat avoiding plastic trays or the fruit and vege store and do away with plastic packaging.

Make sure you carry your keep-cup for your hot beverage, a reusable water bottle and a reusable shopping bag, with the aim to reduce as much plastic waste as you can.

DRC Resource Recovery and Education Officer Hamish Campbell said while much of his job is about engaging with the community through programs and partnerships to influence positive reuse, recycling and waste reduction behaviours, he also does what he can in his everyday to reuse, reduce and recycle in his everyday life as well.

“This is something I am very passionate about and I try and work things into my everyday life as much as I can.

“I have a netted bag we use for fruit and vegetables at the supermarket, and at work I have a stainless-steel bowl in my top draw, alongside the keep cup and reusable cutlery for lunches, rather than needing to get something that comes in plastic packaging.

“It’s small and sustainable actions that make the biggest impact on our environment,” Mr Campbell said.
