‘SCRAP TOGETHER’ TO IMPROVE GREEN BIN USAGE

Dubbo Regional Council (DRC) is encouraging residents with a green-lid FOGO bin to work together and improve their usage of the green bin and divert organic waste from landfill.

The last Kerbside Bin Audit, conducted in 2023, highlighted an opportunity for residents in the region to increase the usage of the green-lid bin by placing all household food scraps and garden waste in the green bin.

“The audit uncovered 38 per cent of the red-lid bin contents was food or garden organic waste which should be placed in the green-lid bin,” Dubbo Regional Council Resource Recovery and Efficiency Manager, Jamie Lobb said.

“By placing this organic waste in the green-lid bin it will help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill. It also allows the food and garden waste to be turned into rich compost that can be used on sporting fields and parks and gardens in the region.”

The green-lid bin takes all food scraps including bones, fish and dairy as well as garden waste. Residents can dispose of food scraps using a compostable bin liner that is supplied and delivered by DRC.

A change by the Environmental Protection Authority in 2022 means paper and cardboard including pizza boxes or paper towel are no longer allowed to be disposed of in the green-lid bin.

“By using your green FOGO bin correctly, you’re helping turn waste into a resource, keeping landfill down, and creating compost that benefits our whole community.”

To request your compostable bin liner, contact DRC by phone 6801 4000, in person at the Customer Experience Centre at Dubbo or Wellington or via DRC&ME at www.dubbo.nsw.gov.au.
