NEW EXHIBITION AND DIGITAL UPGRADE LAUNCHED AT OLD DUBBO GAOL

Three new exciting products have been launched today at the Old Dubbo Gaol with a new exhibition, a digital upgrade for the Gallows Gallery and a digital visitors map.

The exhibition, titled The Life of Crime – Portraits of Repeat Offenders, features historic images through the lens of a modern observer.

It provides visitors with the individual’s age as well as a glimpse of the effects of the hardships of a life spent behind bars with the penal system a marked chapter in their lives.

“The Life of Crime exhibition is another great addition to this culturally significant site and shares more of the history of those who occupied the facility in the past,” Dubbo Regional Council Mayor Mathew Dickerson said.

As an extension on the exhibition The Life of Crime publication has also been produced by the Old Dubbo Gaol and authored by Visitor Experience Officer, Chris Anemaat. This publication is available at the Old Dubbo Gaol.

Also launching is the completion of Stage 2 of the interpretation-digital upgrade for the site. The upgrade was funded through a $250,000 grant from Create NSW’s Creative Capital Minor Works and Equipment - Round Two. As part of the Dubbo Regional Council 2023/2024 budget and operational plan an additional $25,000 was contributed to the project.

The upgrades to the Old Dubbo Gaol included a new touchscreen for the Gallows Gallery display as well as the creation of a 3D-rendered digital map with video, audio and image element that will replace the paper map previously used by visitors.

The new digital upgrades will assist in enhancing the Old Dubbo Gaol visitor experience and increase the time in which visitors spend at the tourism attraction. The digital elements allow the stories and the history of the State Heritage listed gaol to be conveyed to visitors through new innovative formats.

“The new Life of Crime exhibition and the digital elements allow visitors to delve further into the stories of the past at the Old Dubbo Gaol,” Clr Dickerson said.

“The Old Dubbo Gaol is an iconic, heritage listed tourist attraction and will next year celebrate its 50th anniversary. Celebrations to mark 50 years are underway and we look forward to sharing these with the community soon.”

The Old Dubbo Gaol is open daily from 9am excluding Christmas Day. For more information visit www.olddubbogaol.com.au.
